Coastal king single bed frames

How many horrid king single beds have you seen? I know I've seen a lot!!

Our society has a tendency to think of children’s bedrooms when we’re discussing king single beds. But in fact there are lots of teen rooms and guest rooms which only have room for a king single bed.

On top of this, it’s also incredibly hard to find attractive king single beds. There are four times more single or double beds available than king singles.

So my mission is to round up the grown-up king single bed frames available in Sydney/Australia.

I have narrowed it down a bit but looking at mostly white and coastal options instead of solid timber and black as I find this is more popular with my clients.

And i've thrown in a few cheap ones and trundle ones for those that are looking for kids :)

Saturday Indesign 2015

I have always loved Saturday Indesign because it’s a great excuse to stroll around Sydney streets visiting the showrooms of all the fabulous interior suppliers I love but don’t always get the time to go visit.

I took a chance and brought my 1 year old with me, which had both perks and challenges! It’s a great ice-breaker when you have a gorgeous girl smiling at all the staff but you also need more patience and muscles when your little one decides to wriggle out of the pram!

Nevertheless we survived!

I have always found it hard to get around to every precinct. It’s a shame Sydney is so large and that the design stores are quite scattered. Or maybe I should blame the traffic or lack of parking!

In any case today I managed to get to Chippendale, Waterloo and Surry Hills. I had the best intention to get to the Galleria but just ran out of time.  Im contemplating heading back in again tomorrow….hmm tempting!

I started my day at Special Lights where I always do for some breakkie and DQ Round table where the topic was “Emerging Design Personalities”.  Apart from the beautiful lights, the most memorable thing in this showroom was the half naked man in the window! I actually walked right past him twice and only realised a few minutes later.

                                                                       Special Lights

                                                                      Special Lights

Then I headed to the Chippendale precinct via SeehoSu. And I have to share with you my 3 obsessions from SeehoSu.

                                                                  Mama Bear Armchair

Next I went to the Waterloo Precinct.

I’m currently on the hunt for some Black tapware. This is proving difficult because although quite a few were released in Milan in April, they haven’t made it over to Australia yet. So while in the Waterloo precinct I checked out Roger Seller and Pure Interiors for some inspiration.

Roger Seller had three ranges of Black tap ware - Arq, Mare Nero and Pinch. They ticked the box of being Black but didn’t get my heart racing. They had one aged brass option but it wasn’t as intense I was looking for. However the thing that got me excited was the stunning rose copper, it was so delicate and sophisticated.  You have to do yourself a favour and go look at it in person. Online doesn’t do it justice!

Pure Interiors are an importer of Italian products and they had a stunning range of stainless steel tapware that came in eight different options. Gold, Silver, Brass or Black in Matte or polished. Which is awesome! How often can you customise the finish of your favourite tap!

Pure Interiors also have some really cool wallpaper designs that can be customised. They offer a free service for Designers where they will mock up the wallpaper in an elevation for you to reduce or enlarge the scale of the pattern as per your requirements.  This is the one I’m looking at using for a client – Svalbard. Its got a worn timber look.

While in the PYD Building I visited Mother of Pearl and Sons, who are suppliers of door hardware. They have a huge range of products in a variety of styles, from the uber formal to the relaxed industrial style. I would highly recommend heading over there if your looking for something more unique!

                                                              Mother of Pearl and Sons

And that’s a wrap.

All in all I’m definitely a fan of coming on a Friday. The showrooms weren’t too cramped and I felt as though I could take my time.

There was so much to see I have had to limit it to my highlights!

Did you go to Saturday Indesign 2015? I would love to hear your favourite product, supplier or story.

7 ways to add the industrial look into your home

                                                                        How to HQ

                                                                        How to HQ

I saw this gorgeous copper wire pendant at Jamaica Blue Coffee shop the other weekend and it got me thinking about the different ways you can quickly add the industrial look into your home. I am quietly a bit obsessed with the industrial style. I love the contrast of black and white, and the texture of exposed timber and metal. It feels so authentic. Its a style that allows for personal touches.

I just love it.

So here's some industrial inspiration for you! I hope you enjoy it :)

1. Cool White walls

It’s not just enough to have white walls, you have to have the RIGHT white walls. The key to an industrial style interior is using a cool white as it makes everything look bright, clean and crisp. A cool white absorbs less light, so it therefore bounces more light around the room. Which is all part of achieving an industrial look.

The industrial look is all about creating contrast in colour. Bright whites against charcoals and blacks.

Some examples of cool whites:

  • Dulux Lexicon quarter
  • Dulux Vivid white
  • Dulux White on White

Some examples of warm whites:

  • Dulux Antique White USA
  • Dulux Whisper White
  • Dulux Stowe White
                                                                               Lily

                                                                              Lily

2. Black doors and/or skirting boards

I love how much impact you can have with colour. By simply painting your doors or skirting boards in Black you can create a bold statement that’s very industrial-esque.

What I love even more is it’s easier to paint your trim than your walls because you don’t have to move any furniture out of the rooms.

And paint is soooo cheap. You can always change your mind, so be brave and go black!

Try Dulux Domino to get you started.

3. Cage or wire Pendant light

We are very lucky here because cage and wire pendant lights are so on trend at the moment you can pick one up in any lighting shop.

The reason cage and wire pendant lights are industrial is because the industrial look is all about raw and exposed features.  You are trying to make your interior look stripped back to the bones – exposing the elements we normally hide and beautify.

My key piece of advice here is to consider:

a) The scale of your light

Industrial spaces are often quite open plan with high ceilings so you want to make sure your wire pendant doesn’t get lost because its so small. Because it is essentially see-through it almost needs to be twice the size to make you notice it.

b) The quantity of lights

Similar to the reason above, you may need to use multiple pendants in a cluster or group to create a bigger statement. The other reason for using multiple lights is to provide more artificial light. The cage and wire pendants often don’t provide as much light as a regular one with a shade or case.

c) The size of the bulb

Because there is no lamp shade to direct the light you may need to use more lights or brighter bulbs to illuminate your space enough.

d) Bulb style

Because your bulb is completely exposed it needs to be attractive. This is not the type of light where you should use a fluorescent bulb. There are lots of decorative bulbs available in different sizes and brightness so do some research first.

But remember there is no harm in using a cage or wire pendant for pure aesthetics, just make sure you supplement with downlights for functional ambient light.

                                                                    Urban Outfitters

4. Recycled timber

To help create your ‘exposed’ feel of an industrial interior I strongly recommend using recycled timber. It doesn’t have to be for floorboards, you can use it in furniture and accessories too. Once you start looking for it you will start to find it everywhere, from furniture to mirrors and lamps. If your really stuck check out local markets, etsy or approach a local carpenter and get him to make you something. If you’re feeling hands-on check out Pinterest for lots of DIY ideas.

                                                                         Trend Land

Some suggestions:

  • Timber flooring
  • Bed frames and bedside tables
  • Bench seats
  • Coffee tables
  • Lamp bases
  • Doors
  • Entertainment units

5. Concrete look tiles

Not everyone has the ability to pour a concrete floor, particularly because of weight bearing issues. But don’t be disheartened! The concrete look tiles are quite realistic and beautiful. They often come in large sizes which makes it look less like a tile.

I would recommend not going too big, because your tiler will hate you and probably charge you for it! Can you imagine how heavy a 1mx1m tile would be to carry!?

                                                                   Memorable Decor

6. Industrial style handles and knobs

This is probably the cheapest thing you can do to your interior, but it will give it a complete makeover. Update your door handles and knobs with industrial style ones. For the full effect I would be going for a matt black look, but a matt silver/bronze/copper could also work well. Just avoid anything chrome.

                                                                   The Design Files

                                                                  The Design Files

I love the ones at Early Settler, but you could also check out Tradco or any local hardware shop.

Here are some of my favourites from Early Settler.

                                                                       Early Settler

7. Black/white picture frames and prints

Nothing says industrial like the strong contrast of black and white. And what better way to achieve this by filling your empty walls with cool photos and prints. Black photo frames on white walls are very striking, and because its monochrome you can mix a whole bunch of styles and sizes and it will still look cohesive.

Some ideas:

  • Print one of your favourite photos in black/white
  • Write a favourite quote in a funky black font
  • Pick up some cool art from a local market, opp shop or homewares store

Round up of cool and cheap Magazine racks

Hey lovelies,

After researching magazine racks for a client of mine I realised there is seriously slim pickings out there. Who would have thought that it would be so hard to find attractive magazine holders?

So hopefully the collection below benefits you too!

For this round up I was looking for ones that would suit a modern/Scandinavian home. And we didn’t need it to have a table surface as we already had nest tables in this space.

I also didn’t want anything wall mounted as we didn’t have a lot of wall space. But that being said I will probably do a round up of these another time, as there are heaps out there.

Winter armchairs from Brabbu

Winter armchairs from Brabbu

So I just received the latest winter lookbook from Brabbu and I’m loving the cosy, snugly, soft, luxurious and all around enveloping feel of their armchairs! I mean seriously… how could you not want one of these beauties in your home!

I personally love all the velvet ones, particularly being winter here in Oz, but also because I love the way the texture of velvet catches light and creates movement. Personal touches like this is how you can make your interior unique and more ‘you’.

The colours are very on trend, with the blues, neutrals and oranges. And how can we go past the Maori Armchair which comes in Pantone colour of the year - Marsala.

I challenge you to pick your fav?

On trend with Scandinavian style

Scandinavian.jpg

I’m not entirely sure why, but everyone (myself included) seems to love Scandinavian style interiors. Perhaps we can thank IKEA for why the interior design style ‘Scandinavian’ has become so popular. Or perhaps it’s because of the resurgence of ‘mid century’ furniture, which the Scandinavians do so well.

What we do know is that the design ethos from the Scandinavia region is simplicity, functionality and minimalism.

Some of you might be asking who or what exactly is Scandinavia?

It is the northern European region of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.

I could go on and on about my love for Scandinavian interiors, but I might save that for another post.

Let’s just get to business.

If you want to inject a bit of Nordic style into your home then I’ve got you covered.

Check out my shopping list for how to get the Scandinavian look for less!

On trend with Marsala - pantone colour of the year

Now that we’ve hit winter... well, as much winter as sunny Sydney gets! I’m starting to really feel a craving towards the beautiful rich tones of marsala. Either that or I’ve just had too many vinos.

But I must say, I am really loving the contrast it plays against all the metallic’s that are available at the moment. With copper and brass being so ‘hot’ (excuse the pun) it really opens up some great decorating opportunities.

So I have pulled together my pick of on trend Marsala products to transform your home this winter.

Enjoy!
